In one of the surveys on startups, it was observed that timing was the most important factor in the success of the organization. Sometimes there are great ideas, but the timing might be quite wrong. The idea might be well ahead of its time. There are times when you do your effort but there are no results. You try to launch a product. You try to contact big customers, but your organization is not ready for it. Such efforts go waste and we seem to put in our mind that these things will not work because it has been tried earlier.
But this ain't tradition. We know about many traditions which we follow but have absolutely no idea about. There is a whole experiment involving monkeys. A set of 8 monkeys were placed in a big cage and bananas were kept at the top of the prison. If some monkey tried to get hand on bananas, the other monkeys were poured with water. They understood after sometime that whenever any one of them tries their hands on bananas, others will have to suffer. Others in turn beat the one trying to go up for bananas. Soon, one monkey was replaced with other. He did not know anything about tradition and he tried to go to get the bananas. Result: Others started beating him. Rest of the monkeys were changed soon and without knowing reason, they understood that if someone tries to go on top, others will beat him. A tradition was formed.
Similarly, we too form tradition and do not want to give old things a try. Instead, try them and who knows the time of the idea has come. And you will be successful. When you start again, take a fresh page and restart your work. You may get new ideas and it will be worth your effort.
